When measuring turbidity at 600 nm, why are measurements different between different microplate readers?


Turbidity measurements are performed by measuring the amount of light scattered by the sample that is being measured, thus these measurements vary depending on the distance of the sample to the detector. In the past microplate readers and traditional cuvette-based spectrophotometers were modified in order to perform turbidity measurements but now microplate readers and spectrophotometers can perform these measurements routinely. Good practices dictate the use of standards to accurately determine cell counts from turbidity measurements.
